When To Start Horse Riding Lessons Okotoks For Children

By Paul Fisher

Children that mostly show an interest in riding are those that live on stables or regularly visit them. It can be worrying for parents when children want to start horse riding lessons okotoks when they are very young. Parents may feel that it is not safe or the children are not old enough.

Expert advice that teaches a child to ride will depend on various things. First is the age of the child. Most recommend that from the age of seven its okay to take this step. At this age the child is relatively mature to handle such a large animal as the horse. The kid can also concentrate for longer thus able to sit on the horse for a longer period. It is dangerous when a child gets restless while on top of this animal as this can lead to fatal falls.

Height of the rider is another aspect to look at. At the age of seven, some children are small and short. It would therefore be impossible and uncomfortable for them to mount and dismount from their back. They are also not able to reach the reins properly to control the horse.

Safety while riding is of paramount importance and nothing should be ignored. Some of these safety gears to be considered includes boots, hat, trouser and top. There are boots made especially for this very exercise. It is unwise however, to purchase them just for one lesson and then store them somewhere if the child looses interest in the sport. Its better to use trainers for a few lessons, which is okay although not ideal.

One thing that can save a child during a fall is a protective hat. Most schools do not allow any rider on a horse without a hat. It is recommended for one to buy their own hat and check that it fits properly and comfortably.

Where a rider is not able to buy a hat, the schools have hats ready for hire. Its necessary to check that the hat has never been involved in a collision or accident as it may have faults and therefore not protect you properly. Exchanging it for another one is wiser than regretting later when an accident happens.

A rider should be comfortably dressed in a well fitting trouser, its essential to choose something that is light weight and will not tear or chaff easily; jeans are stiff and heavy. This is a physical exercise that makes one sweat and therefore jeans will only make the rider uncomfortable when wet. Children riders should be dressed in a comfortable top that will allow their hands to move freely. Shorts are not advisable due to chaffing of legs

These schools have rules first and foremost for the safety and comfort of the riders. Secondly, the rules cover them in the event of accidents and lawsuits. However, it should be a fun experience even for beginners when all these regulations are strictly followed which is the long run motivates one keep practicing especially for those that pursue this as a sport.
